Disaster Relief
Over the years LMD has created and sustained wide-ranging networks of people in Turkey and through out the Middle East. When emergencies happen, such as the earthquake in western Turkey in 1999 or the Bird Flu in 2005, we have been there making all of our assets available. To this end our goal is to set aside a percentage of our annual budget to create an emergency response fund.
Most recent crisis: BIRD FLU AT MOUNT ARARAT
The 80,000 Kurds on the southern approaches to Mount Ararat have been our friends for much of LMD’s 100 year ministry. It is these people who were struck by the Avian Flu in 2005. When the restocking of poultry was banned, our solution was to provide cattle for the villages.
Now, in partnership with community leaders, the Noreen Charitable Trust has funded a long-term answer to the destruction of their chickens through the construction of a centralized poultry farm. Over 20,000 chickens are now providing protein and income for the neediest in this valley.
Its capacity is much larger! We would like to speed its development to full capacity. The farm is self-sufficient, while all profits are dedicated to community development for schoolgirls.
We are seeking gifts and grants to increase the farm’s operations to full capacity.
