Van Life Center
By providing a safe and comfortable working environment, the Life Center answers the need for meaningful employment felt by Kurdish women recently displaced by war. At the Life Center, Kurdish women work in a cooperative, profit-sharing business, making traditional flat-weave carpets. This facilitates a culturally appropriate art form while securing an income for their families.
More than a training and production facility, the Life Center is a venue for conferences and educational events relating to women’s legal rights and health issue. Nurses also regularly visit with instruction and for medical check-ups. Literacy training for all ages is a daily occurrence.
Sponsoring a nurses’ visit for a week costs as little as $500; qualified, master-level teachers are available for $350 a week. It is our hope to expand the Life Center’s outreach through increased funding.
